International Students Courses

KTS has been accepting international students for many years. A dormitory annex provides on-site accommodation where visiting students can stay. Each of the courses below are offered twice a year (eg: in spring and autumn) in consecutive running order.

Beginners Course

Intended for: Beginners
Duration: 10 days
Capacity: 5 students
Held in English

People who are touching upon weaving for the first time learn the general foundations of dyeing and weaving over 10 days.
Through making samples, gain an understanding of the mechanism of a basic floor loom, and learn about the structures of plain weave, twill weave, satin weave and more.


Foundation Kasuri Course

Intended for: Experienced Weavers*
Duration: 10 days
Capacity: 5 students
Held in English

Kasuri is a technique whereby weaving threads are resist-bound with elastic or nylon tape prior to being dyed, in order to create different coloured patterns in woven cloth.
This course is intended for international students who have some experience with weaving and would like to try kasuri for the first time. By making samples, students learn warp-kasuri, weft-kasuri, and double kasuri.

 

*Prerequisite skills: weaving, warping, setting up a floor loom.


Applied Kasuri Course I

Intended for: Foundation Kasuri Course Graduates
Duration: 1 Block/ 10 days
Capacity: 5 students
Held in English

Upon completion of the Foundation Kasuri Course, continue to strive for additional development. In this course, students learn the basics of Zurashi Gasuri (shifting kasuri) and Nassen Gasuri (stencil dyeing kasuri). 


Applied Kasuri II (20 days)

Intended for: Applied Kasuri Course I Graduates
Duration: 20 days
Capacity: 5 students
Held in Japanese and English

*An English speaking staff member will sometimes be able to help you.

Make an original artwork by applying the skills learnt in the previous Kasuri courses. This course is self directed, and you will study alone with guidance from a teacher.

Schedule

Class Hours: Monday through Friday 9am to 4pm
The studio is available for your self study until 9pm weekdays, and until 6pm weekends and public holidays.

Application Procedure

for International Students Courses in 2023 *updated Apr. 19, 2023

 

1. Please fill in and submit the online application form below by each application deadline. You will need to agree to the International Students Course Terms and Conditions to apply. We will be happy to see your portfolio or photos of your work. Even if the works are of a different medium, they are helpful for understanding your background. We will not return any physical items, so please do not send (post) your work.

*Students are not accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. All eligible applications submitted by the application deadline will be considered.
*You will receive an e-mail confirming receipt of your application. If you do not receive a reply within 5 business days, please let us know. Please note that we will be closed during the following periods:

Dec. 23- Jan. 11 (Winter Vacation), Mar. 17 - 31 (Spring Vacation), Apr. 29 - May 8 (Golden Week)


2. If accepted, you will receive an estimate for your stay (tuition, accommodation, meals). Please pay by the payment receipt deadline to complete your registration.

Please pay by bank transfer. Please note that you will have to pay for ALL banking charges (bank transfer fees (source of transfer and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation), and the currency conversion fee).

It is possible to pay online with a credit card (VISA, MasterCard, JCB, AMERICAN EXPRESS, Diners Club Card).

10% tax included.

*11,000 yen for students returning within 3 years (2017-2019)
